SEVEN PERFECT SUMMER DAYS IN & AROUND SOUTH HAVEN
SUNDAY
After settling in following your 4:00 check-in, spend your first afternoon just relaxing in the pool or catching up on a good book in the screened porch. “Wine down” with a nice dinner out at Tello Italian Bistro (524 Phoenix St, 269-639-9898) or take the family to Su Casa Restaurante (206 Center St, 269-767-7493) for delicious Mexican cuisine. End the night with ice cream from the legendary Sherman’s Dairy Bar (1601 Phoenix Rd, 269-637-8251).
MONDAY
Enjoy a day at the beach! South Haven is fortunate to have seven public beaches or access sites. The North and South Beaches are the largest and most frequently used. Both have concession stands, restrooms, paid parking areas, and are ADA accessible. Deerlick Creek Beach is less than a mile down the road from our home (yes, that’s the same creek you see down the ravine in our back yard and it feeds to Lake Michigan!)
If you ventured to one of the beaches near down, stop by Michigan Maritime Museum (260 Dyckman Ave, 269-637-8078) before heading home to experience the rich maritime heritage of the Great Lakes. The museum recounts Lake Michigan's nautical history including permanent and changing exhibits. Take a sunset sail on Friends Good Will, a tall ship with regularly scheduled sails on Lake Michigan from mid-May through mid-September with crew dressed in full 1812 era regalia.
TUESDAY
Plan an active day of golf, fishing, hiking, biking or watersports!
Hit the links. If you’re into golf, book a tee time at one of the two local courses:
Nab the “big catch.” If you’re a fisherman, Lake Michigan is a great place to try your luck! The usual catch is trout, salmon, and perch.
Fishing charters can get you out on the waters and their local knowledge will help you catch a big one. Need bait and tackle? Head to Pyle’s Porthole, 141 Dunkley Ave, (269) 637-6720.
Or simply set sail (perhaps at sunset) for a chartered cruise:
If hiking or biking is more your speed, head to the Kal-Haven Trail, a beautiful wooded outdoor trail that extends from South Haven to Kalamazoo. It covers 33.5 miles and goes through small towns, over bridges, meanders through the countyside, and passes historical points of interest. When there is a 4" snow base, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing is also permitted. The trailhead (with large parking lot) is located at 51 Bailey Ave. From our house, you can bike directly to the Kal-Haven via the Van Buren Trail! By car, you can access the Van Buren Trail via the South Haven Trailhead is located on Lovejoy Street next to the water tower. To find the trailhead, take LaGrange Street to Aylworth Avenue (next to South Haven High School across from McDonald's). Go west on Aylworth Avenue to Kalamazoo Street. Go South on Kalamazoo Street to Lovejoy Avenue. The trail is a 0.1 miles to the west on Lovejoy Avenue on the south side of the street. Find more info and maps at: http://www.vbco.org/trails.asp
Need to rent a bike? These local resources will get you geared up and can offer trail advice to meet your distance and difficulty preferences.
Lake Michigan offers amazing opportunities for adventure water sports. Rent a kayak, paddleboard, boogie board, canoe, or even a small fishing boat.
WEDNESDAY
Put on your walking shoes and start the day with a trip to the South Haven Farm Market for fresh, local produce and specialty foods. Located downtown at the Huron St. Pavilion (539 Huron St), the market runs from 8am-2pm Wednesdays from June – August and Saturdays from May – October. From there, stroll down Phoenix Street and explore the downtown shopping district. The quaint, scenic streets provide an attractive backdrop to more than 70 shops, as well as a diverse collection of local cafes and restaurants. Antiques, clothing boutiques, fine art galleries, resort wear, imported toys, outdoor gear, books, gifts, and gourmet foods – even a store devoted solely to blueberries – delight the serious shopper and browser alike. Stop for a late breakfast or early lunch at Phoenix Street Café (523 Phoenix St) or grab an ice cream to go at Kilwin’s (415 Phoenix St) then continue down to Riverfront Park and walk along the Black River. Walk the pier and see the South Haven Pierhead Lighthouse. This is a great spot to revisit one (or many) evenings during your stay to take in the magnificent Michigan sunsets.
THURSDAY

It’s a beautiful night to take in the Riverfront Concert Series. Each Thursday at 7pm, beginning in May, South Haven’s Riverfront Park hosts a variety of free musical performances, including jazz, classical, folks and contemporary.
